Psychological support and help in dealing with specific problems of old age through group work with users

The project “Psychological Counseling for Senior Citizens” has been successfully operating for three years and is conducted by a psychologist from the Foundation through psychological-educational programs and support and self-help groups. Groups are organized once a week at various locations (7) for a period of 1.5 hours. They can be adjusted if necessary according to the age range of users, taking into account the fact that this type of work is primarily aimed at middle-aged people. Individual counseling is available as needed. With the goal of increasing the efficiency of action with regard to the shown needs we are looking for volunteers.

About the project:

Ageing is a process which begins before old age; it starts early and lasts long. Some abilities such as motor control start to decline even before middle age. Ageing implies a series of changes which the elderly face, from the very biological changes, changes in health status, changes in the psychological perception of oneself, changes in the perception of the environment, to some specific individual issues of each person.

PSYCHOLOGICAL WORKSHOPS FOR SENIOR CITIZENS are organized to support coping with lifestyle changes associated with ageing successfully and optimally. They are organized in groups where different psychological topics are discussed theoretically, practically and in a fun way, under the expert guidance of a psychologist.

Learning and memory in old age – what are the expected changes in memory that come with ageing, can I do something for my memory, can I make it stronger, and if I can, HOW can I do it. Through training, you learn how to strengthen your brain and your thinking and memorizing abilities.

Relaxation techniques – how to relax when I need it, what do I usually do to relax, what techniques can I use every day without going to a spa and for a massage to calm me down. Relaxation techniques of breathing, imagining and muscle relaxation.

Communication skills – okay, I have been communicating my whole life, mostly successfully, and what do I do when I get caught up and cannot solve a problem because I am not heard, I am not understood. There is a theoretical and practical solution.

Grief – loss is unfortunately a part of life, and it is ever more present with ageing. Some people will tell you with their best intentions that eventually we “get numb”. Is this true or is it a myth? How to deal with loss of money, property, health, intimacy, with the death of our loved ones. What can be expected, what is “normal” grieving, how long does it last…

Depressive mood, being depressed, depression – what is the difference among these three things, what are the signs of alarm, when the depressed person needs professional help.

Family relationships – sometimes they are the source of the utmost joy, and sometimes the source of the greatest sorrow. Why is it so and what can I do for a good family life…

Loneliness – support for the lonely is directed at finding ways to cope with loneliness and how to get greater social support. Loneliness in old age and reduced activity are important factors which influence the development of depressive symptoms and can lead to depression itself. A support group is a preventive measure for the development of depression in old age.

Expected results for the organization and users *

The completion of regular counseling activities (counseling for social protection, legal counseling and psychological counseling).

The improvement of psychological counseling through the engagement of psychologists-volunteers who could enable the expansion of the work area of psychological counseling for senior citizens.
