About the Senior Center

Senior Center

The space of the Senior Center was equipped and activities for senior citizens were organized as part of the project Housing Units Community. The opening ceremony of the Housing Units Community was held on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 11:00 o’clock, and the Community was opened by the Mayor of Zagreb, Mr. Milan Bandić.

A year after opening, the Senior Center operates as a separate project.

The Senior Center is a gathering place where senior citizens meet their social, physical, emotional and intellectual needs through various workshops.

The doors are open to all interested senior citizens of the City of Zagreb every working day from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In addition to the workshops led by professionals, senior citizens can use the Internet and a well-equipped library every day. All the activities of the Center are free!

The workshops are designed to cover a broad range of interests and to leave room for further development of the activities in accordance with the users’ needs, opinions and ideas.

Users are happy and feel free to express themselves creatively in a group at the photo workshop, art workshop, watercolor workshop and one of the more recent ones – the workshop of making jewelry from recycled materials. Many users fight a sedentary lifestyle by a daily practice of yoga, Nordic walking and preventive exercise. Our users have shown a great interest in learning foreign languages, so we have, along with beginner groups of English and German, organized groups of Spanish and advanced English. Our female users organize a weekly get-together at a workshop titled “How to be beautiful and happy”, where they follow the latest trends in makeup, hairstyles and clothing, and receive expert advice from a makeup artist.

The Center for Empowering the Rights of the Elderly has been active as part of the Senior Center. Its goal is to introduce senior citizens with their rights and the procedures to protect these rights, to encourage active participation in the community and to improve the quality of life.

The sound therapy workshop enables the users to develop their inner harmony and accumulate the energy and strength for their daily chores, as well as to increase their creative energy.

Through its activities, the Senior Center seeks to emphasize the importance of changing the point of view where senior citizens are seen as passive members of the community. It also breaks the prejudice about senior citizens as a burden on society, by activating their knowledge and skills, where they become a resource and active members of the community.
